Part (a) does not need to know the number of plates or bowls. Just take the group of plates as 1 object and the group of bowls as the other object in comparing cost.

Part (b) - each unit represents an equal number of plates or bowls. A number of bowls cost $27 more than an equal number of plates. Hence, we can find the number as one bowl cost $1.80 more than one plate.
