There are many ways to solve this question using subtitution.
Step 1 is to make one of the variables in the equations the subject. So essentially you have 4 choices:
1. Make x the subject in equation 1
2. Make y the subject in equation 1
3. Make x the subject in equation 2
4. Make y the subject in equation 2
Step 2 is to substitute your result for step 1 (equation 3) into the other equation (if you used equation 1 in the first step, sub into equation 2 and vice versa). Here you will get the answer to your first variable.
Step 3 is to substitute your result for step 2 (equation 4) into equation 3. And you will get the answer to your second variable.
