You can use guess and check. I will show assumption method.
Total = 36 cows and chickens altogether.
Cow = 4 legs
Chicken = 2 legs

Assumed all are chickens, total legs
= 36×2
= 72

Short of legs,
= 114-72
= 42

Each cows have 4-2= 2 legs more than each chicken.
Therefore, total cows
= 42÷2
= 21 cows.
