You can think of this this way.

18 : 24 = 3 : 4

This means that every 3 oranges occupy the same space as every 4 apples.

For the purposes of spacing, "3 oranges" can be replaced by "4 apples" and vice versa.

Now, there are already 12 oranges. Since the basket can fill up to 18 oranges, there is basically room for 6 more oranges.

But we wish to occupy the remaining space by apples instead.

3 : 4 = 6 : 8

This shows that the 6 oranges can be replaced by 8 apples.

So, 8 apples can be placed in the box.
