For proving qns, every step forward from start point and every step backward from the end point can be a potential breakthrough. Don't give up and ask yourself what you can introduce to the qn, or what could you have done differently at every step. Sometimes going away from the qn for awhile and letting it process in the background while you do other qns can be of great help.
