Discriminant of roots of equation
= b² - 4ac
= 4² - 4 (2) (1 - k)
= 16 - 8 (1 - k)
= 16 - 8 + 8k
= 8 + 8k

which will be negative when k < -1, indicating that the curve will not have any intersection with the horizontal x-axis, and using the other fact that the coefficient of x² is also positive, the curve will certainly lie above the x-axis completely.
