From having "9 crayons left" to having "a shortage of 5 crayons", there is a difference of 14 crayons - 9 extra crayons plus 5 further crayons needed to satisfy the pupils.

Because the teacher gave 2 extra crayons to each student, she needs 14 extra crayons in total.

There must have been 14/2 = 7 pupils.
