There need to be an “entry point” into the battery and an “exit point” out of the battery and these must be uninterrupted.

If A fused, the current will not be able to cycle through the circuit. If B fused, A and C would still light up. If C fused, A, B and D would light up. If D fused, similar to B, A and C would light up. This is because we can trace paths where cycles of the current won't be interrupted.
