But I thought you can substitute x=y since that is provided in the first part of the question?

so x+y is 2y

The issue is that when we solve 2y = y, we get y = 0 as the only solution.

The line 2y = y is still correct in itself, however.

This is seen in the following.

2y = y
2y - y = 0
y = 0

Looking back at 2y = y, and using the now-known fact that y = 0 is the only solution, dividing both sides of the equation by y is essentially dividing numbers by 0.

Division by zero is undefined.
