To prove if a stationary point is maximum or minimum, you have to find the 2nd order derivative (d^2L/dx^2).

Another of looking at it is that L represents distance and there has to be a minimum distance rather than a maximum distance. Not ideal for a proof but this intuition can guide you to the correct answer.
