Normally, our expansion is valid only when the value of x lies between 0 and 1. This is because x^n will become smaller and smaller only when x is in that interval.

0.5^1 = 0.5
0.5^2 = 0.5 x 0.5 = 0.25
0.5^3 = 0.5 x 0.5 x 0.5 = 0.125

and so on, with the realisation that we are just repeatedly multiplying with a positive number less than 1.

If we were to use x which is greater than 1, imagine what happens when the binomial expansion contains x^2, x^3, x^4 and so on.
