sin 3x
= sin (2x + x)
= sin 2x cos x + cos 2x sin x

(using the addition formula for sin (A + B))

= (2 sin x cos x) cos x + (1 - 2 sin²x) sin x

(using the double angle formula for sin 2A and the all-sine form of the double angle formula for cos 2A)

= 2 sin x cos²x + sin x - 2 sin³x
= 2 sin x (1 - sin²x) + sin x - 2 sin³x

(using the identity sin²x + cos²x = 1 to express our result in sines only)

= 2 sin x - 2 sin³x + sin x - 2 sin³x
= 3 sin x - 4 sin³x
