(a)
image of -1 under f just means f(-1).
substitute x=-1 into function f, gives f=-3.5

(b)
long way ...
first find inverse function of f,
then substitute x=-7 into the inverse function.

short way ...
let 2x+6/(x-3) = -7,
reduce to quadratic equation & solve for x.
will get x=2.5 or -3.
since f is defined only for x<0, so reject x=2.5
final answer x=-3
