Stuck at part b
Our cuboids come only in dimensions of 10 cm by 5 cm by 8 cm. Howsoever we bring in the cuboids to form cubes, we can only fit the cubes using a whole number of cuboids of this size.
Note that we are not allowed to cut the cuboid into parts either.
To do this, we look for the lowest possible common multiple of 10, 5 and 8. This is 40, because10 x 4 = 5 x 8 = 8 x 5 = 40.
So, the cube must have sides of 40 cm each.
Its volume is 40 x 40 x 40 = 64 000 cm³.
On the other hand, the volume of each cuboid is 10 x 5 x 8 = 400 cm³.
Number of cuboids needed
= 64 000 / 400
= 160
