Let x be the speed of the canoe in still water.
Speed upstream = (x-5), since the canoe is moving against the current you have to minus 5
Time taken upstream = 12 ÷ (x-5)
Speed downstream= (x+5), since the canoe is moving with the water the speed is greater hence plus 5
Time taken downstream = 12 ÷ (x+5)
Total time taken = 1.5 hours
12 ÷ (x-5) + 12 ÷ (x+5) = 1.5
From here, you can form a quadratic equation and solve for x
