The easiest way...
Since the children is same. We let the number of children = u.
Case ①, each get 5 bookmarks, total bookmarks = 5u + 3
Case ②, each get 7 bookmarks, total bookmarks = 7u - 9
Total bookmark are same for case ② and case ①, therefore,
7u - 9 = 5u + 3
2u = 12
1u = 6
So, total children = 6.
Since the children is same. We let the number of children = u.
