No. of white squares in figure 1 = 1 = 1 × 1
Total no. of white squares in figure 1 = 9 = 3 × 3
No. of white squares in figure 2 = 4 = 2 × 2
Total no. of squares in figure 2 = 16 = 4 × 4
No. of white squares in figure 3 = 9 = 3 × 3
Total no. of squares in figure 3 = 25 = 5 × 5
Compare the figure number with the numbers in the products?

At nth step there are total (n+2)**2 squares.
Out of which n**2 are white and (n+2)**2 - n**2 = 4(n+1) are black.
