let x be the number of puffs bought by kai ling

the equation is then: X * 0.8 = ((X + 5) * 0.6) + 1.2
0.8X = 0.6X + 3 + 1.2
0.2X = 4.2
X = 21

Kai Ling spent 21 x 0.8 = $16.8 on 21 pieces of curry puffs

to check back, faizal bought (21+5) x 0.6 = $15.6 on 26 pieces of curry puffs
