m is an unknown. Think of it as 1 unit.

$ (5m + 6) is left in the end.

This is equal to $81.

So the question wants you to solve for m.

5m + 6 = 81

So 5m = 81 - 6

5m = 75

m = 75 ÷ 5

m = 15

$ she had at first

= $3m
= $(3 × 15)
= $45
