①Look at the thousands place first.
We need to get a result of 3, so the only way is 8 - 3 since for 4-digit numbers, the thousands place cannot be 0.
8_ _ _
-
5_ _ _
②Next, look at the ones place.
For the first number you are left with 5,3 and 0.
For the second number you are left with 8,3 and 0.
Since you must end with a 0 in the ones place, the two digits in the ones place must be the same so they cancel each other out exactly.
So it can only be 3 or 0.
We could have :
8_ _3
-
5_ _3
Or
8_ _0
-
5_ _0
③ But now look at the hundreds place. It has to be a 4. The only possible combo is 5 for the first number and 0 for the second number.
This also implies that the 5 will have to be broken down into 4, and 10 is carried over to the tens place.
This means that the last digit has to 3.
