Because, this is graph of y = f(x). y is plotted against x, not against t.


dy/dx → positive value (you can see that y is strictly increasing as x increases from a < x < b)


Given : dx/dt → negative


dy/dt = dy/dx × dx/dt

dy/dt = positive value × negative value

dy/dt = negative value.
