It is useful to learn how to recognise square numbers:
1 x 1 = 1
2 x 2 = 4
3x 3 = 9
4 x 4 = 16 etc
Part (b) - finding the square root of the number

Part (a)
sum of 1st number and last number = 50
sum of 2nd number and 2nd last number = 50
There are 24 such pairs and one single number, 25 in the addition equation for finding the total number of dots.
