P5 or 1st time learner, use listing method... Else use gap and difference or algebra.

Sorry I made a calculation error in my previous post
Excess-shortage method :
① If he gives each student 5 bookmarks, there will be 4 bookmarks left.
②Now, if each student is to have 6 bookmarks instead, then he needs to give each of them 1 more.(6 - 5 = 1)
③But his 4 leftover bookmarks is not enough. He needs 5 more bookmarks on top of that.
4 + 5 = 9. So he needs to give the students 9 more bookmarks such that they all receive 1 more.
(4 is the excess, 5 is the shortage. Hence the name 'excess-shortage'. We add the excess to the shortage)
④ Since each student needs to receive 1 more bookmark, number of students there are to receive 9 more bookmarks in total = 9 ÷ 1 = 9
So there are 9 students.
⑤Number of bookmarks bought
= 5 bookmarks per student × 9 students + excess
= 45 + 4 = 49
Or
6 bookmarks per student × 9 students - shortage
= 54 - 6 = 49
