At first:
Kurt had x dollars
John had x + 60 dollars

Then:
Kurt gave $12 to John
So at the end,
Kurt had x - 12 dollars
John has x + 60 + 12 = x + 72 dollars

Now, at the end, John has 3 times as Kurt
x+72 = 3 (x-12)
x+72 = 3x - 36
2x = 108
x = 54

Hence, Kurt had 54 dollars at first and at the end, Kurt has 54 - 12 = 42 dollars
