There is one overlap for every 2 adjacent circles.

Total there are 3 overlaps. The area of 3 overlaps is 3 × 30cm² = 90cm²

Area of entire figure = area of 4 circles - area of 3 overlaps

= 4πr² - 90cm²

= 4 × 22/7 × 7cm × 7cm - 90cm²

= 616 cm² - 90cm²

= 526 cm²

Then subtract the 3 shaded areas to get the unshaded area

= 526cm² - 90cm²

= 436cm²


More directly, this can be summarised as :


Unshaded Area = area of 4 circles - area of 6 shaded parts
