i dont understand this quadratic equation question pls help ty

Each student in a class sends a greeting to each of his classmates, that is
if there are n students in a class, each student sends n-1 greetings ( to all students except himself)

each student send n-1 cards
Total cards sent = 870
n * (n-1) = 870
n * (n-1) = 3*29*5*2
n * (n-1) = 30 * 29
n * (n-1) = 30 * (30-1)
n= 30
Hence, there are 30 students in the class
