Grouping :


Put every three 50¢ coins and one 20¢ coin into a group.

3 × 50¢ = 150¢ = $1.50
20¢ = $0.20

Total value in one group = $0.20 + $1.50
= $1.70


Number of groups that can be formed with $8.50

= $8.50 ÷ $1.70
= 5


Number of 50¢ coins

= Five groups × three 50¢ coins per group.

= 5 × 3
= 15

Please use guess and check to find a number of 20cent and 50cent coins that will add up to $8.50. Remember to make everything the same units, here we make everything from cents to dollars.

The better method and more efficient way for this question is the grouping concept.
