Your part a) is correct.

Notice that 31408 has a 3, a 14 and a 8.

This is similar to 3x² + 14x + 8

So rewrite the number as a sum first.

31408 = 30000 + 1400 + 8

Then you factor out those numbers.

= 3(10000) + 14(100) + 8

We have x² so rewrite 10000 as 100²
(10000 = 100 × 100. In fact, seeing the 100 next to 14 is already a clue to substitute x = 100)


= 3(100²) + 14(100) + 8


Use the substitution accordingly

= (3(100) + 2)(100 + 4)

= (302)(104)


These are two factors of 31408
