So you can't just guess the base and height. So you find the whole square /rectangle. Then minus off the 3 little triangles

why is it 3 x 2 for triangle 1?

This is because the 1st triangle has a base of 3 small squares and a height of 2 small squares. Therefore area of 1st triangle = 1/2 × 3 (base) × 2 (height) = 3cm2
