There’s no missing info in the qn. It’s alright.

See 2 Answers

Time taken for David to complete journey = 270/70 h
= 27/7 h

Distance travelled by Peter = 270 - 10 km
= 260 km

Peter’s speed = 260/(27/7) km/h
= 67.4 km/h

Ans: 67.4 km/h

Hi! Thanks for answering but I think I need more clarification. Does your answer assume that David started in Town B, while Peter started in Town A? Cuz the way the question is phrased, I had assumed that they both started at a point between Towns A & B so I was stumped. What about the 1330 timing? It doesn’t serve any purpose? Thanks in advance for explaining.

Thanks for asking. Well, I don’t see there’s a need for assumption. Yes, the qn is not that clear in it’s phrasing. However, this does not mean you have to assume. It’s just that it’s indirect. You got to do some thinking, visualisation (if you have to) and be strong in your mathematical concepts.

Before explaining the assumption part, let me first go into the 1330 timing. It serves as an extra.Without it, you can still solve the qn.But,it is noteworthy to know at that particular time, David reached town A and Peter was 10 km away from town B. You can solve for any time related qn in case it’s in the qn (etc.Find the time David start his journey or they both start their journey).Either did the qn ask you or not, you know what is the start time. A possible reason the timing info is there is because the person who set this qn wants to test you on whether you know when to make use of it. There are times you don’t need to always make use of all the info in word problems. This happens. So, watch out for extra info like this in other qns.

Moving on to the next explanation, only distance between the towns is given. Also, the qn did not mention anything about where is the starting point of David and the distance he covered. We know he reached town A. Here alone, we can guess that he started at town B. He continue driving until he his at town A. To confirm, a comparison was made with Peter being 10 km away from town B. That is, 10 km away from the distance covered by David. When we compare,we look at one thing in common. Here, that is the distance between the towns. So, we we say they each started at the towns respectively. Hope these 2 explanations clear your confusion. :)

1) 1330 is redundant
2) 270 km/h is not a friendly number, 210 or 280 will be nicer.

Thank you for answering! :) I’m just wondering if the manner in which the question was asked is misleading since there’s no mention about both guys starting from which towns. Cuz I had assumed they started at a point between Towns A & B

It's mentioned in the opposite direction
