We don't need the first two fractions.

¼ of rectangle is shaded means:

Ratio of shaded area to total area of rectangle = 1 : 4

Next, since we see ⅞, ratio of (○ +△) : rectangle
= 7 : 8

The rectangle is the repeated identity. So we should make the units the same for the rectangle in both ratios.

Ratio of shaded area to total area of rectangle
= 1 : 4
= 2 : 8 (after multiplying by 2)

So now we can say :

Shaded area is 2 units
○ + △ is 7 units
Rectangle is 8 units

Area of whole figure

= area of rectangle + ○ + △- shaded area (it's the overlapping part)

= 8 units + 7 units - 2 units
= 13 units

13 units = 260cm²
1 unit = 260cm² ÷ 13 = 20cm²

Rectangle area = 8 units
= 20cm² × 8
= 160cm²

Nice illustration by the way.

I think there was a similar question in their workbook about a Square S, and Rectangles R and T that overlap.

The info given that a specified fraction of Rectangle R and T were shaded respectively was redundant like in this example since it was asking what fraction of the figure was shaded.
