Since you know the ratio is 8:5. We can use guess and check method.
Draw a table and write down how much will it take if he bought 8 shirts and 5 caps. If it doesn't tally to $900, increase the number of shirts and caps bought proportionality. Make sure tue ratio remains 8:5.
E.g.
16 shirts and 10 caps
24 shirts and 15 caps
32 shirts and 20 caps
.
.
.
And see which pair results in $900. And that will be the answer.
