Adding a number to itself...

...will not make it a prime number since we have k repetitions of it. This results in k also being a factor of the result.

In this case, q is added to itself three further times, so there is a total of four 'q's, so 4 is also a factor of the expression (and in fact, 2 is also a factor).

Another way would be to say because q were to be multiplied by an even number, and thus it became an even number greater than 2, thus it is even and it must be composite :D
