Sadly you do need to know some ideas from a later trigonometric topic in A Maths such as sin 60 = (sqrt 3) / 2 and possibly an idea from a later trigonometric topic in E Maths such as the general area of a triangle formula before being able to attempt part (a).
The formula for area of triangle is
A = 0.5 * a * b * sin C
where
sin C = sin 60 = (sqrt 3)/2
A = that given area 1/4 [12 + 9 sqrt 3]
a = that given length (sqrt 3) + 2
b = what you need to find
