Initially, nick had 1 unit and paul had 2 units
In order for nick and paul to have the same number of marbles, paul has to give half of the extra marbles that he has, which in this question, is 85.
So you can split the extra unit that paul has into 2 units and when you do that, you need to split the other original 1 unit into 2 as well. Therefore, there are 6 units in total!

Hope this helps!
